The outer layer of the body is referred to as skin. As it is the outermost layers, it protects the inner body against water loss and pathogens. There are different types of skins in humans which vary from dry to oily. In humans, its also the largest organ weighing up to nine pounds. It also plays a vital role in controlling the body temperature by sweating. It has blood vessels and sweat glands which control the temperature. The immune cells present provide protection against infection. Apart from other functions, the skin acts as a sensory organ. The skin itself is made up of different layers. Each layer performs its own specific function. Nails are much thicker and tougher form of skin. Similarly hair is also part of the skin.
Redness of the skin is the abnormally red color of the skin. It can be caused by many different reasons.
Sun Burn
Extreme expose to sun or ultraviolet light can cause skin redness. One should avoid extreme exposure and use moisturizing lotion to sooth your skin.
Insect Bites
Insect bites and stings also cause skin redness. Depending on the bite, take precautionary measures and consult the physician for treatment.
Hives
An allergic reaction to food causes hives. Redness of the skin is caused and red welts appear on the skin.
Ingrown Nails
This condition appears when the nail starts growing inwards. Usually a very painful condition and special care should be taken to cure it. To prevent infection, an effective topical gel should be applied to the affected area on a regular basis.
Contact Dermatitis
A condition caused by direct contact with an irritating substance. Special care should be taken to avoid any such substance which causes reaction to any particular skin type.

Excessive use of diaper causes skin redness in infants. Care should be taken to change them on regular basis. Anti rash cream is effective in soothing the skin.
Ringworm
Ringworms are caused by fungus. They are contagious and can spread from direct contact from skin to skin. Cats are common carriers of skin worm too.
Burns
Burning of the skin also makes it red and sore. Depending on the intensity, special attention should be given to it and physician consulted.
Drug Allergies
Redness can be used due to reaction of some drug taken. Different drugs at times react with different body types and can cause reaction, making the skin red and irritable.
Acne
Acne can cause redness of skin too. Its a skin condition with symptoms such as pimples, white and blackheads.
Allergic Reaction
A reaction to a particular allergy also causes the skin to irritate and get red. Depending on the intensity, it is advisable to consult the physician.
Psoriasis
It is a skin disorder which causes the skin to irritate and makes it red. Characterized by skin flakes and inflammation, special attention should be given to get it treated.
Apart from the above, many other reasons can cause skin redness. One must be careful, as skin is a sensitive part of body. It is always advisable to consult a dermatologist in case skin redness or any other such symptoms occur.
